This is a wonderful painting showing a Sikligar sw This is a wonderful painting showing a Sikligar sword polisher and his assistant at work. 

The bow drill propulsion mechanism may have been bi-directional but it may also have been working like a one directional clutch drive, with the worker releasing tension on the cord during the back stroke. A leather cord would work well in this way.

The work of the wootz ingot maker, the blade smith, the weapons polisher, handle maker, engraver, and scabbard maker was all performed by different individuals in the community. Each one being an expert in their craft.
